Northstar Search and Rescue is a volunteer-driven canine search and rescue organization that responds to requests from law enforcement agencies, we do not self-deploy. Searches are unpredictable and can happen at any time, including nights, weekends, holidays, and workdays. Our members are highly dedicated, and agencies can rely on us to respond, even at inconvenient times.

Search and Rescue requires a level of dedication that goes far beyond typical volunteer work. Missions often take place in physically and mentally demanding environments, requiring you to navigate off-trail terrain for multiple hours in challenging conditions. As a member, you must be physically capable of handling these conditions while carrying the necessary gear. While no prior SAR experience is required, maintaining physical readiness is essential.

Training is a critical component of being mission-ready. Northstar SAR conducts official group training every week, but members are also expected to train independently to keep both themselves and their K9 partners prepared. On average, participation in trainings and meetings requires over 20 hours per month, with additional time invested at home refining skills. Advancing in SAR work requires ongoing dedication and continuous learning.

While the demands are high, the rewards are immeasurable. You will develop valuable skills, make a meaningful impact in your community, and work alongside a team of highly committed individuals and skilled K9s. In addition to search missions, members also participate in community outreach and public safety events to support the broader mission of Northstar SAR.

Our team primarily consists of K9 search teams, but owning a dog is not a requirement to join. Every member must become a certified Field Tech, whose primary responsibilities include supporting K9 teams, assisting with base operations, and operating sonar. Additionally, we offer opportunities to serve on our dive and drone teams for those with the necessary skills and interest.
